16 April 2010

Information For Presenters

  1. Please bring your presentations on a flash drive at the time of your registration. This will allow the files and slides to be transferred to the local computer in the correct presentation room.
  2. Please check before your presentation that your slideshow is available on the local computer. It may pay to check all of your slides as sometimes images are lost when transferred to another machine.
  3. You may use your own laptop for the presentation but we strongly encourage use of the local computer. This allows seamless transition between presenters and the local computer has technical support.
  4. Please pre-check and if necessary bookmark any web links you want to use during your presentation. Work on the basis that you will have wireless internet connection that may limit the ability to download large documents and use of web-based videos.
  5. The length of most presentations is 25 minutes. Please keep to time. A chairperson will manage each conference stream and time cards will indicate the remaining time. In the interests of promoting discussion, we expect most presentations will be  between 15 to 20 minutes with the remaining time for questions.
  6. Consider posting to the DEANZ Cloudscape in Cloudworks any additional resources or web links that the audience may wish to follow up. See…

http://cloudworks.ac.uk/

Finally, if you have any questions or problems before, during or after your presentation, then please speak with someone on the Conference Registration Desk.

We wish you all the best for your presentation(s).

15 April 2010

Welcome everyone to this final 2010 DEANZ conference update. The conference is only a matter of days away and the last week has been busy making final touches to the programme. Please note that we have made some minor changes to the programme due to a late cancellation and the need to meet individual travel requirements. The revised Programme Outline is available on the DEANZ website or from the following address…

http://tdu.massey.ac.nz/files/DEANZ_Conf_programme.pdf

A full printed copy of the Programme Handbook with abstracts will be included in your conference satchel along with a CD-Rom containing refereed papers. In addition, the CD-Rom will include an electronic version of the latest issue of the DEANZ journal. A hard copy of the Journal of Open, Flexible and Distance Learning will also be included in the conference satchel for all DEANZ members.

Speaking of the Journal, we encourage delegates to take advantage of the symposium offered on Tuesday afternoon by Dr Ben Kehrwald and Mark Nichols. This is an excellent opportunity for new delegates, aspiring authors and emerging scholars to talk with and get advice from the Editors. Regardless of your level of experience come to this symposium to learn how to publish small projects, literature reviews and research findings in the DEANZ journal. The symposium is preceded by an interesting presentation on the open, flexible and distance learning resources available to educators on Ako Aotearoa’s website. The rich online resources that already exist for educators on this website may surprise you.

It might also be of interest to know that so far we have approximately 165 delegates registered for the conference. We expect to exceed this figure with a few late registrations coming through in the last week.

If possible we encourage delegates to register on Sunday afternoon (from 3:00pm onwards) to familiarise yourself with the venue and to pre-plan your personal conference programme. We also hope many of you will attend the welcome reception and cocktail event from 5:00pm on Sunday. The venue is level 3 of Te Papa and there will be signs to direct you to the right location.

We have decided not to supply tea and coffee before registration on Monday as in keeping with cultural protocols refreshments will be served immediately after the opening speeches and Måori welcome. Tea and coffee will be available on the other mornings before the conference programme starts.

An added feature of this year’s DEANZ conference is a cocktail function on Monday evening to present a DEANZ Life Membership Award. The recipient of the award has made a major contribution to the field and their identity will be announced at the function. We are grateful to Massey University for sponsoring this special event, which also serves as an opportunity for DEANZ to acknowledge Massey’s 50th Jubilee of Distance Learning.

Last week’s programme update talked about Professor Terry Anderson’s keynote address on Tuesday morning. This week we are pleased to reveal Terry’s presentation will be followed by some insightful comments from a students’ perspective. We are delighted to include a ‘student voice’ in this year’s conference with Liz Dutton (University of Otago) and Ralph Springett (Massey University) helping to keep delegates grounded with some of the ‘realities’ of being a 21st century learner.

A futures theme starts the Tuesday afternoon programme where our invited speaker John Treloar, Education Director, Asia Pacific, Adobe Systems, talks about new tools for new times. John shares some of the exciting educational initiatives currently underway and supported by Adobe. This session should set the stage for The Great Debate that follows where we have some outstanding speakers lined up to argue the moot:

“That the new places, spaces and tools of learning produce better outcomes and opportunities for learners.”

To wet your appetite Simon Atkinson (Director of Teaching and Learning, Massey University College of Education) leads the negative team and is joined by Niki Page (CPIT) and Peter Guiney (Ministry of Education). Derek Wenmoth, Director eLearning, Core Education is the leader of the affirmative team. He is joined by Terry Neal (Blended Solutions) and Professor Niki Davis (University of Canterbury). We have three guest judges who will make expert comments and audience participation will be encouraged. The debate is shaping up to be one of the major conference highlights.

While the conference dinner will be another highlight make sure you attend the Annual General Meeting (AGM) on Tuesday afternoon. To accommodate new members nominations for the DEANZ Executive will be accepted from the floor. However, you are strongly encouraged to submit your written nomination before the AGM as this assists with pre-meeting planning. If you need further encouragement to attend the AGM there will be valuable spot prizes available to members.

On Wednesday the conference has a local flavour. Derek Wenmoth begins the day with a second bite of the cherry through an interactive digital horizons session. This opening session will explore some of the learning and teaching implications of new technologies over the horizon. Derek will draw on the format and findings of the Horizon Reports that he has contributed to for several years. For delegates new to these annual reports the following link makes useful background reading:

http://horizon.nmc.org/australia/Main_Page

Before the final keynote from Professor Sir Mason Durie, we are pleased that Mike Hollings (Chief Executive Te Aho o Te Kura Pounamu, The Correspondence School) has agreed to talk about some of the new developments underway in New Zealand’s largest school. We think some of the lessons from recent initiatives should be of wider interest to other sectors.

The conference ends with Dr Bill Anderson (DEANZ President) and Dr Peter Coolbear (Director Ako Aotearoa) providing final addresses. We reflect on the main themes and evaluate the success of the conference. This is an important session as the feedback we receive from delegates helps to shape future conferences.

Throughout the conference you can use twitter to share your observations and thoughts. The hash to begin talking is #deanz10. We have also established a DEANZ Cloudscape in Cloudworks for asynchronous discussion and relevant links during the conference. A search from the homepage using the term ‘DEANZ’ will find the relevant cloudscape. See…

http://cloudworks.ac.uk/

Lastly, the only thing that remains now is to order a week of fine weather. We can only cross our fingers that the current run of sunny autumn days continues for another week or so. Wet or fine we look forward to meeting everyone at this year’s DEANZ conference.

8 April 2010

Hello delegates and presenters

This is another brief conference update. The clock is counting down and preparations are well in hand for what we hope will be a truly vibrant and stimulating conference. It is 25 years since DEANZ was established and the conference is a great opportunity to celebrate the value of building quality connections across traditional sector and institutional boundaries.

We are pleased to announce that Marcus Akuhata-Brown will be our MC for this year’s conference. Marcus is a qualified teacher and gifted communicator. Some of you may remember his keynote presentation at the 2008 conference. We are very fortunate to secure Marcus and we know he will make a major contribution to a successful and memorable conference.

In my last update, I talked about how Professor Liz Burge will start the conference with ‘No8 wire’ and the excellent bookend that Professor Sir Mason Durie will provide with his keynote on the last day. In the middle, on Tuesday, we have a real icon in the field with Professor Terry Anderson from Athabasca University. Terry is well known for his seminal open access book on the Theory and Practice of Online Learning. For delegates yet to read this book there is some valuable pre-conference reading. You can download the book from the following address:

http://cde.athabascau.ca/online_book/

This is Terry’s first visit to New Zealand and the conference at Te Papa should give him a great opportunity to experience New Zealand hospitality and our bi-cultural heritage. We are very fortunate that Terry accepted our invitation to visit Aotearoa/New Zealand, as the snow will soon be melting in hometown Edmonton.

Speaking of international guests, this year’s conference has a record number of overseas delegates. We have a several Australian colleagues which seems appropriate with Sunday’s welcome reception on ANZAC Day.

The afternoon session on Monday should be another highlight with Associate Professor Lisa Emerson leading an interactive dialogue that helps to unpack our quality theme. Lisa is well known for her ability to engage large audiences in serious conversations and her standing as an educator was recognized in 2008 when she was the supreme winner at the National Tertiary Teaching Excellence Awards.

The theme of awards continues through to the Tuesday evening programme. The dinner is a key part of the conference as we announce the DEANZ Awards and then sit back to be entertained and challenged by our after dinner speaker. For many years, Dr Stuart Middleton wrote a regular column for the New Zealand Education Review and he is a past recipient of the QANTAS Media Award as the Best Social Issues Columnist. When all the talk is done we have a local band to finish the evening with wine and song.

Mention of wine reminds me that you need to pack your digital camera as we have some excellent books to give away as prizes for the best picture taken before, during and after our social events. For Twitter users the social side of the conference extends online, as free wireless internet access is available in most of the venue. So we invite you to read and contribute tweets leading up to the conference and during presentations through:

http://twitter.com/deanz10

Lastly, before you pack your bags and head to Te Papa we invite you to read the latest issue of the DEANZ Magazine. The publication contains further information about the conference and is downloadable from the DEANZ website:

http://www.deanz.org.nz/home/

The Organising Committee is looking forward to D-day where we hope the fruits of many months of work will be obvious. Just one more conference update to come before the main event!

7 April 2010

There has been a great surge in late conference registrations so this year's conference should be a real bumper event. The diversity of delegates is a standout feature and the record number of international attendees should make for a great professional learning opportunity. Spread the word as we don't want people to be disappointed if they leave it to the last few days before trying register.

31 March 2010

The last keynote from Professor Sir Mason Durie, entitled Distance Education, Blended Leanring and Enhanced Outcomes for Måori Leaners, should be a major highlight of the conference as we finish with a strong New Zealand flavour. Sir Mason's abstract is now available under the keynote link on this website.

26 March 2010

It's less than month away from the DEANZ conference and we're busy making final preparations. The conference programme is now finalised and should be available from the website shortly after you read this message. We hope you agree the programme contains a rich variety of offerings. There's something for everyone. We're excited to learn that Professor Sir Mason Durie will be receiving his Knighthood at Government House the day before his keynote. The DEANZ conference will be Sir Mason's first public appearance after the occasion and we're looking forward to his contribution and insightful perspective on the two conference themes of 'quality connections' and 'boundless possibilities'.

However, we expect lots of talking, thinking, wine and laughter before we have an opportunity to hear from one of New Zealand's most widely respected educators. Winding the clock back the conference begins with No 8 wire, wool and "sure to rise" when Professor Liz Burge will set a lively stage for conference deliberations in her opening keynote address. Liz is a committed adult educator and is recognised world-wide as a leading distance education practitioner. She will share her lifetime of experience and illustrate how past practices can inform the future of open, distance and flexible learning.

The conference is designed to engage delegates. On Monday afternoon we're looking forward to Associate Professor Lisa Emerson leading an interactive discussion. Lisa is a recipient of the Prime Minister's Award for Sustained Excellence in Tertiary Teaching and is well known for her ability to interact with large audiences. Don't miss this session which is likely to be a real highlight of the conference.

Another highlight later in the programme will be The Great Debate. You will have the opportunity to participate in a serious but entertaining debate on a topic that strikes at the heart of the conference theme. We have two impressive teams lined up and some expert judges. Make sure you come early for a good seat! The debate topic may be revealed closer to the event, so keeping watching for updates on the DEANZ website.

23 March 2010

We are very pleased to announce that Adobe in partnership with Webqem have taken up Bronze sponsorship of the DEANZ conference. Adobe products are used extensively throughout the education sector and we welcome their participation in the event. Adobe's involvement through Webqem further expands the record number of trade displays for delegates wanting to see some of the latest developments in the field.

22 March 2010

There has been a minor delay in making the draft programme available due to a couple of unexpected complications. Professor Sir Mason Durie is now scheduled to receive his Knighthood at the time of his original keynote presentation. This clash has meant we have needed to change his keynote address to Wednesday 28th April with Professor Terry Anderson now on Tuesday. The draft programme will now be available on Weds 24th March.

19 March 2010

The latest DEANZ magazine has some interesting information about the forthcoming conference and makes good reading. Since the release of the magazine registrations there has been another surge in registrations and we expect to set a record for the number of delegates attending the DEANZ conference.

16 March 2010

The draft programme is coming! Sorry about the delay but a crucial person has been on leave and we needed to negotiate more space to accommodate all the presentations.

15 March 2010

A DEANZ Life Membership award will be made at a special cocktail event on Monday evening to a well known educator who has made a major contribution to the field.

14 March 2010

We have a well known educator booked as our after dinner speaker on Tuesday night and some outstanding entries for the DEANZ award to be announced at the dinner.

12 March 2010

We have a record number of trade displays for this year's DEANZ conference. These will help to make the conference an even better professional learning experience.

1 March 2010

The following workshop is available before the DEANZ conference.

ePortfolios: Practical Scenarios of Personalised Learning

ePortfolios provide a wide range of opportunities for reflective and social learning in personal, educational and professional contexts.

This event will discuss some practical scenarios of using ePortfolios and demonstrate how they can be used to support a personalised learning experience that extends beyond the boundaries of the face-to-face or online classroom or workplace to facilitate:

*     Documentation of knowledge, skills, abilities and learning

*     Tracking personal and professional development

*     Defining, developing and embarking on a career path

*     Monitoring and evaluating personal and professional performance

*     Sharing and collaboration

*     Assessment strategies that demonstrate the whole learning experience not just the outcome

Professor Mason Durie, keynote speaker, receives a Knighthood in the New Year Honours.
